Giving your artwork away. Unbelievable.
Last weekend at the art fair, I was burned to crisp. Yes, it is funny, but darn painful as well. At least we had a blast doing the show and I sold some of my babies off to a great home. It is always hard to sell pieces you have worked so hard on.
I do have to say, what is with artists under cutting themselves? I realize we are in the middle of a recession, but to sell a print for 10 bucks, or even an original work of art for 20 bucks?!?! I cannot believe it!
We artists must ban together and start pricing our work for what is it worth! I guess if you think your worth 20 bucks, go for it. I know I am not. I spend HOURS and hours on one single painting and quite frankly I should be paid for all of that work.
At an art fair setting though, when artists undercut themselves SOOOO much, I look like the artist who charges TOO much and that is craziness.
Do some research about pricing art, check out some books, or at least give yourself a PROFIT for the labor, and don’t just cover your costs for materials. I don’t care if your retired and enjoy painting as a hobby. If your going to sell it, do it right.
Come on artists. Come on.
Whirls and Swirls. My life.
So, I have been painting like a mad person for the last two weeks.
With the Falconbridge Art Fair in NC, on May 3rd, 2 galleries wanting my work displayed ( I can’t believe it!), and a September 11th PEACE showcase coming up , it has been a whirlwind of a ride.
About a month ago I was told by someone “what a REAL artist” is. Seriously, a person I actually had in my life was telling me what it meant to be a REAL artist and why I wasn’t one. All I can say about this is, if you are creating RULES about art and the people who make it, you obviously have lost sight of what is means to be creative, free, and make pieces you really love. That is my opinion and I am usually right.
I have since chosen to remove this person’s bad advice and energy from my life ( YIPPIE, what a celebration!).
Okay enough of the soap box. Most of these pieces are new and will be sold in the next few weeks. Check it out and leave me your thoughts. Good, bad, and fabulous! I love it all, after all I am an artist. If I could handle four years of critique in art school, I sure as hell can handle public opinion!
